The Little Prince need not have feared that baobab trees
would overgrow his planet, as they grow quite slowly. In
fact, their growth is so gradual that their wood has no
rings, making it difficult to determine their age. There are
eight species of baobab, only one of which is native to the
African mainland. Another is found far away in Australia, and
the remaining six are on the island of Madagascar. The African
baobab is much appreciated by elephants for its succulent bark
and by humans for its edible leaves and fruit.
