The bleak skies of Iceland make a fitting backdrop for this Lutheran church, named Hallgrímskirkja, designed during the Depression era. The architect probably intended its facade to resemble the pipes of a church organ. Today, its silhouette brings to mind the Space Shuttle in launch position. Standing before the church is a statue of Leif Ericsson, the Viking explorer who may have been the first European to set foot in North America.
